Green building is such a fast-evolving field that it doesn’t matter whether you’re an architect or whether you’ve literally never thought about how houses work until right this minute—we can all learn a little more about it. The question is, where do you start?
Below, we’ve highlighted resources from across the country and into the U.S. Many of them are better suited to professionals or people who have building experience but want to learn more about how to do things sustainably. But there are also plenty of resources out there for complete novices who are learning about building for the first time. This post offers a mix of possibilities for rookies and pros.
We’ve included a range of learning formats, from conferences to full courses, online and in-person options. While it’s difficult to judge how challenging a course would be for any individual, we’ve tried to give you some idea of who the courses were designed for so you can better decide if an option is right for you.
Where possible, we’ve included the cost of the course or event, although students should confirm registration fees with the organization, since fees are subject to change.
As a note, sustainable building is a big industry, and you can pay as much or as little as you wish to become better informed about it. We’ve suggested learning opportunities at a range of price points. Be aware that in the realm of education, more expensive doesn’t mean better and free doesn’t mean bad.
Also please note that this guide is intended to show you some opportunities that are available. It isn’t a recommendation for any of the resources we’ve listed. Before you sign up for anything, think about what you want out of the experience. Ask questions of the organizers and consider whether what they’re offering will meet your aims.
In-Person and Hands-On Learning

Get the Green Building Project Checklist
Use this handy checklist on your next project to keep track of all the ways you can make your home more energy-efficient and sustainable.
Not everyone can take the time out for an in-person course or workshop, but if you can, in-person learning is a fantastic opportunity to get information, ask questions and, ideally, try your hand at the techniques you want to learn.
Conferences and Workshops
The best first step is to explore the options your own community has to offer. There are community groups across the country who specialize in everything from green retrofits to renewable energy to sustainable cities. And there are so many of them who are offering one-off talks and workshops (often free or low-cost) that we couldn’t begin to list them all here.
Below are just a few suggestions for regularly occurring events that might be helpful.

Courses
The best place to look for courses if you want to learn about specific aspects of green building is your local post-secondary institution.
Colleges and universities don’t just run formal degree programs or programs for people looking to be certified in something—they offer shorter courses and continuing education options that are often geared towards people who just want to learn more about a subject.
They’ll vary in format, length, cost and intensity, but they’ll all be taught by experts in the field and will give you opportunities to engage with them about your specific interest.
That said, here are a few privately-run courses that might be of interest to you.
