Recent reports from the European Patent Office (EPO) and other global intellectual property bodies highlight an unprecedented growth in patents for green technologies, with a specific focus on sustainable construction, green building materials and innovative waste management solutions.

In 2023 alone, green tech patent filings rose by over 33 percent, illustrating the industry’s shift towards eco-friendly innovation.

This momentum also shows the increasing role of AI in green tech. While AI patent filings overall have slowed, green AI technologies have emerged as a very specific but fast-growing category, now constituting 4 percent of AI patent filings globally.

Mike Williams, an AI lead at Marks & Clerk, emphasizes that companies are using two decades of AI advancements to tackle environmental challenges, both in the construction industry and otherwise, predicting further growth in AI-driven green technologies.

The rapid rise of green technology patents reflects the building sector’s commitment to sustainable practices. Recent innovations cover many areas, from carbon-sequestering materials to adaptive AI systems for energy optimization. 1. Carbon-Sequestering Concrete

Among the most groundbreaking patents is one for carbon-sequestering concrete, which actively absorbs CO2 during the curing process. This material transforms buildings into carbon sinks, significantly reducing the sector’s carbon footprint. By integrating recycled materials, this innovation lowers the environmental impact of construction projects while aligning with global climate goals.

    Meanwhile, patent filings from Asia and North America are also notable, driven by investments in renewable energy, sustainable transportation and advanced waste management technologies. Globally, AI-driven clean technology patents now represent nearly 12 percent of total patent activity, reflecting their important role in the energy transition and climate mitigation.
