The Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund is investing $996,000 into the Alternative Construction Technologies Hub located in the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) to quicken the development of new manufacturing and construction processes and materials.
The Alternative Construction Technologies Hub is set to train 24 individuals and support 36 Calgary companies between 2024 and 2027. This will create opportunities for small- and medium-sized businesses to present the various challenges they face to researchers and students who test and create new solutions that can be applied within the construction industry.
The Alternative Construction Technologies Hub will focus on creating more efficient automated modular construction, the 3D printing of structures, the use of robotic technologies in prefabricated houses, and developing carbon negative building products.
Moreover, the Alternative Construction Technologies Hub will emphasize the creation of green composite materials for a variety of construction projects, as well as the upcycling of construction materials.
“With the type of population growth Calgary is experiencing, the construction sector is critical in delivery of housing,” said Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek. “OCIF’s investment in the ACT Hub will ensure the construction and manufacturing sector can see long-term growth based on emerging technology, adding to Calgary’s momentum of building a resilient city and diverse economy.”
Alternative Construction Technologies Hub Supporting the Uplook Economic Action Plan
This is in line with Calgary’s economic action plan, labelled Uplook, which among other things is a strategy designed to focus investments into the enhancement of construction project efficiency, the improved quality of construction products, and the minimized environmental impact of construction materials and projects.
Thanks to this new investment from the Alternative Construction Technologies Hub, Calgary’s construction sector will receive a boost to improve construction quality, productivity and sustainability.
