For developers who want their buildings to be smart, installing their buildings with power over ethernet (PoE) technology is like giving a student books. It’s a big part of how they get smart. By supplying DC power through a copper cable, PoE offers a wider range of positions for end devices that can monitor and manage facilities such as lighting, security and air conditioning. 

Modern buildings require a management system that provides relevant and timely information to optimize energy consumption. Power over Ethernet (PoE) can play a crucial role in enabling more sustainable buildings by facilitating the integration of a technologically advanced management system. This integration allows for real-time monitoring and control, enhancing energy efficiency and making the building more responsive to occupant needs.

PoE combines the data and power supply in a single cable, simplifying the building’s cabling requirements. In addition, the need for less cabling creates faster installation times and substantial savings on cabling material. 

The original scope of PoE concentrated on security cameras and IP phones. Subsequently, it expanded to cover lighting and HVAC systems and then went further to manage activities like window shading. 

The expansion of PoE to these items reduced rather than increased the amount of cabling because it used the additional wires in the ethernet cable that had previously remained unused to supply power to different items.

Cisco created the original design of the PoE system over 25 years ago when it copied the power supply to landline telephones and developed the idea of providing both data and power in one cable for other electronic items. PoE is in a lot more than just Cisco equipment these days having become a widely adopted standard that is commonplace in buildings all over the world.

    Advantages of Power over Ethernet Compared to Regular Wiring

    • A more reliable power supply as PoE uses uninterrupted power supply units. 
    • PoE systems offer the facility the ability to start or terminate equipment remotely. 
    • The ability to monitor and perform energy-saving functions creates a more efficient system that can continuously monitor the system’s safety. 

    Disadvantages of PoE 


    One significant limitation of the PoE system is its limited range of 100 metres. Although PoE repeaters can extend the range, the multiple use of these devices makes the system a bit bulky. 

    Large monitors or high-resolution cameras may require more power than the PoE system can deliver. In addition, older equipment may not be supported by modern PoE systems, which entails either replacing older equipment or purchasing adapters to provide the required upgrade. 

    While the cable savings may be significant, they must be balanced against the additional cost of essential hardware, such as injectors and switches, which are generally more expensive than standard network equipment. 

    Energy loss over extensive or extended-distance systems means that the application of PoE may have some constraints that make it inappropriate for these types of networks. 

    Some Applications of PoE Technology in Buildings


    Data

    Energy-efficient Lighting 

    Power over Ethernet lighting systems provide an automated way to control and efficiently monitor lighting throughout the home. The software can monitor each room or section of the home and control lighting as required. By monitoring movement in rooms and detecting an absence of movement, lighting can be switched off and switched on again when movement is detected. 

    As PoE lighting uses a lower voltage, the need for protective conduit is removed, reducing installation costs and making the installation process simpler and quicker. 

    Security Systems

    Power over Ethernet can power and transmit data for security devices such as IP cameras, access control systems, and video intercoms. This integration simplifies installation by eliminating the need for separate power outlets. It enables real-time monitoring and alerts, enhancing building security and streamlining management.

    Lighting systems can be integrated with other features, such as cameras and door lock systems. For added security, cameras and lighting can be designed to work together. When the camera security system is triggered, the lights can be switched on automatically. 

    HVAC Systems

    PoE powers sensors and thermostats that monitor temperature, humidity, and occupancy levels. This data allows HVAC systems to adjust settings for optimal energy usage and comfort. PoE facilitates zoned control and real-time adjustments, reducing waste and enhancing overall building efficiency.

    AV Systems

    PoE is used to power and control AV equipment like microphones, speakers and interactive displays. It allows for centralized control from a single platform, ensuring uninterrupted operation and reducing clutter from additional power cables.

    Other Uses of PoE in Buildings

    Wireless access points (WAPS) can be powered using PoE, which allows for optimum positioning to generate the best Wi-Fi connection, producing a more reliable and stronger internet connection. 

    PoE smart doorbells offer a convenient and secure way to monitor home access. They allow secure two-way communication between residents and the person ringing the doorbell. 

    PoE-compatible VoIP phones are the modern solution to situations where several phones are required in a particular area.
