Homeowners and builders alike now have a new way to learn about zero carbon building with the new Zero Carbon Building Micro-Credential program offered by the Canada Green Building Council. The goal of the program is to provide Canadians with the knowledge and experience needed to build homes that have zero carbon emissions.
“The growing demand for low-carbon building solutions requires building professionals to acquire and integrate new skills and knowledge now,” said Thomas Mueller, President and CEO of CAGBC. “Drawing on 20 years’ experience delivering high-quality green building training and the expertise we gained from our Zero Carbon Building program, CAGBC’s new micro-credential will provide the key concepts and insights that Canada’s building professionals need to advance decarbonization today.”
The Zero Carbon Building Micro-Credential program was created in an effort to support Canada’s building sector, particularly to meet the growing demand for low carbon retrofits and new low carbon buildings. Initiatives such as this are essential for helping Canada to achieve its 2030 carbon reduction targets and for its target of total decarbonization by 2050.
This program is based on the insight gained through the creation and implementation of the Zero Carbon Building Standards, which is currently Canada’s only building standard that focuses solely on carbon reductions. At this point, there are over 100 certified buildings, with hundreds more being registered.
Zero-carbon retrofits and new construction require a specific set of knowledge and skills to properly execute and implement. Teams engaging in these sorts of projects must be more collaborative and integrated, and must be able to use common terminology and approaches that everyone involved is able to understand, all the way from the initial design process through to the construction and finalization of projects.
The Zero Carbon Building Micro-Credential program’s main focus is on low carbon fundamentals, particularly to help establish a lexicon that can be used across the industry. There is a live and interactive seminar to start, entitled “Introduction to the Zero Carbon Building Standards.” There will then be more interactive workshops and on demand courses rolled out throughout the autumn.
Those who complete this program will receive a badge from the global open badge management platform Credly, which demonstrates that participants have sufficient knowledge in zero-carbon building principles.
