SFU Wins the 2024 Inspiring Home Award

Simon Fraser University recently created an affordable housing project with thermal efficiency in mind as well as other design features that support passive cooling and heating with the main goal being to minimize energy usage.

These affordable housing buildings include a total of 90 rental units with a mix of unit types. Specifically, these spaces are designed for students of Simon Fraser University that have a child or spouse.

In a statement made by Simon Fraser University president Joy Johnson, she says that “SFU is committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all SFU students, and that means building appropriate accommodations for students at every stage of their life journey.”

Thanks to its efforts in sustainability, the Canada Green Building Council has awarded SFU with the 2024 Inspiring Home Award.

On a similar note, Peel Region’s Office of Climate Change and Energy Management was recently given the Government Leadership Award by the Canada Green Building Council.

This office has played a large role in creating the NZE construction policy, formally known as the Net Zero Emissions (NZE) New Construction Policy and Standard with a goal to prevent any new emissions from being released into the atmosphere. The results can already be seen, as eight corporate buildings are currently being designed and built in the Peel region to the net zero emissions standard.

Just next door to Peel Region in Halton, Ontario’s first all-electric net zero speculative industrial building was recently completed as another example of net-zero construction growing in the province and branching out into industrial buildings.
