4 Things You Should Know About Solar Generators

Morning sun on grass - 4 things to know about solar generators

Solar generators are a renewable, much quieter and cleaner alternative to those loud grumbling gas-powered generators that are annoying to be around. Although you might think solar would be a limited source of energy for this kind of application, solar technology has come a long way in recent years.

Solar generators come in many different shapes and sizes. Some look like huge boxes on wheels, while others look like packed-up camping tents. Some can be easily transported, making them an ideal option for those who travel often. Read on to discover four things you should know about solar generators.

1. How Solar Generators Work

Most of us already have a general idea of how a solar generator works because it works similarly to a solar PV system, but on a smaller scale. To add to your current knowledge, know that solar generators work by absorbing the sun’s rays into solar panels that are on top of a tracking system.

Once the sun moves into position, the generator can start charging your appliances and gadgets. There are some solar generators that have two batteries: one battery charges while the other provides power to your appliances. The batteries can be made from lead-acid or lithium-ion for added portability and longevity.

Some types of solar generators do not require a tracking system because they use single panel stationary arrays, absorbing energy from sunlight in an efficient manner while providing more electricity than a tracker with fewer panels would provide.

Although there’s no moving parts involved in these systems, there can sometimes be an internal fan to keep things cool (in order to make sure the solar panels work at maximum efficiency). If you live in a hot environment, it might be a good idea to invest in this type of cooling fan.

All of these systems usually come with multiple outlets and USB ports for charging phones and tablets (and sometimes laptops too). They also come with several types of adapters that plug into different types of appliances.

Solar generators come in a range of power. Some are able to power large appliances like TVs or fridges while others are only able to provide backup power for smaller things like your phone or laptop.

    2. How Much Wattage You Need

You will need to know how much wattage your electronic devices consume to find out what kind of generator you will need because a small portable generator may not produce enough power at any given time to power something as large as a fridge.

If your intent is to provide lighting or other electrical needs that are not high-demand, then you may be able to get away with a smaller, less powerful generator. If you want to run a larger appliance like a freezer, you’ll need something more powerful.

If you’re considering a model of generator that doesn’t come with solar panels, this is also something that you will want to take into consideration when you are estimating how many panels it will need.

    3. What Type of Solar Generator You Need

There are three types of solar generators: portable, stationary, and hybrid.

    • Portable solar generators are great for emergency backup power because they can easily be carried from one place to another.
    • Stationary solar generators are great for going off-grid or working at a construction site because they have far more wattage than portable alternatives and can handle heavier appliances as well.
    • Hybrid solar generators combine solar power with other energy sources, such as wind turbines, fuel generators, or grid electricity to provide a more flexible solution.

No matter which type of generator you choose, it’s important that you understand what the wattage rating is so you can properly determine which appliances you can power with your generator. Also consider battery capacity to determine how long you’ll be able to run each device.

    4. How Much Solar Generators Cost

If you’re not looking to spend too much then there are several less powerful models that may meet your needs.

If you’re willing to pay more money for a higher-powered model, however, you’ll have the option of buying one with more power and more functions.

You should consider how much power you need before making your purchase, read reviews online, and make sure that you understand what different watt ratings mean in terms of compatibility with appliances (in case there’s no manual included).
